Mechanical, chemical, and wet/dry biological filtration in a tank-mounted external filter unit pumping gallons per hour. The Millennium multi-filter features the BioGrid plate which provides high surface area as support for nitrifying bacteria that perform the important function of biological filtration--oxidation of toxic ammonia to relatively non-toxic nitrate. The BioGrid plate is totally separate from the mechanical and chemical filtration. This preserves the biological filter even when the mechanical/chemical filtration cartridge is replaced. The ImpellAir pump assembly, using venturi action, mixes fresh air with aquarium water before it passes through the BioGrid plate. As it passes through the plate, the biologically active surfaces are exposed to both dissolved oxygen in the water and undissolved oxygen in the air. This wet/dry action provides the nitrifying bacteria with much more oxygen than would normally be available, which greatly increases efficiency and capacity of biological filter. The MechaniChem filtration cartridge contains two layers of polyester fabric enclosing activated carbon in a single convenient unit. The polyester fabric traps particles, while the activated carbon is housed in a unique baffle system that ensures the entire stream of water flows through carbon during every pass through the filter. The AdjustaFlow telescopic siphon intake tube easily adjusts to various depths, and water flow is regulated by a top-mounted control. The flexible design permits easy removal of the intake tube for cleaning without removing the ImpellAir assembly.
